Understanding Homeschooling

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word homeschooling? Most people don't know what that word entails; they automatically think of online schooling or tutoring. Homeschooling has been around for many years and has been a progressive movement within the past few years. It is when parents educate their children at home instead of sending them to traditional public or private schools. "Families choose to homeschool for a variety of reasons, including dissatisfaction with the educational options available, different religious or educational philosophies, and the belief that children are not progressing within the traditional school structure." (Martin, 2022).

Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states of the U.S.A. and also many other countries. Although each state has its homeschooling laws, it is not required for parents to have a teaching license or degree to homeschool. Desire, dedication, and willingness are the prerequisites to homeschooling. Parents can schedule their children's day, join or conduct co-op groups, go on field trips, and choose or make their own curriculum. Many homeschooled children participate in music instruction, art classes, STEM projects, and more as they meet once or twice weekly through their co-op group. "Subjects typically taught include the standard disciplines followed in a traditional school program as well as those that capitalize on the child's interests. In his best-selling book The Element, Ken Robinson writes that "the key to [educational] transformation is not to standardize education, but to personalize it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions." A homeschooling atmosphere provides a natural setting in which parents can deliver an individualized method of instruction that matches the child's unique interests, ability, and learning style." (Martin, 2022)
